Effects of Nonlinear Chirp on the Self-Phase Modulation of Ultrashort Optical Pulses
In this article, we analytically investigate the spectral broadening by self-phase modulation of strongly chirped optical pulses. The dispersion due to the nonlinear optical process is expressed as functions of a linear and a nonlinear initial chirp. As a result, it is found that the third-order dispersion strongly depends on the initial linear chirp and the nonlinearity for self-phase modulation.

We demonstrate efficient spectral compression of picosecond pulses in an all-fiber configuration at telecommunication wavelengths. Thanks to parabolic pulse shaping, a spectral compression by a factor 12 is achieved with an enhanced Strehl ratio. We present an ongoing experiment where high power, sub-picosecond 10 μm laser pulses will be produced at 1 Hz. To achieve this 3 ps pulses of a 2 GW CO2 laser were broadened via self-phase modulation in GaAs and compressed in a dispersive element. Temporal and spectral data are presented which demonstrate the possibility of compression by more than a factor of 3.
